Like any other system in the body, adrenal glands can malfunction and lead to what is known as adrenal fatigue . According to Endocrine Web, adrenal glands make about 50 hormones. Most people know about DHA and cortisol, but the majority are unaware that the adrenals also make up 40% of women's estrogen and progesterone. On the other hand, 40% of testosterone in men is made in the adrenal glands as well. Here are some important aspects you need to know about adrenal fatigue.
Do you feel tired all the time, even after getting enough rest? Are you craving salty foods? If you have any of these symptoms and consult a naturopathic doctor or complementary medicine doctor, they’ll likely tell you that you’re suffering from adrenal fatigue. So, what exactly is adrenal fatigue?
The term "adrenal fatigue" became popular in 1998. It was coined by James Wilson, PhD, a naturopathic doctor specializing in alternative medicine. He describes the condition as a group of related symptoms that occur when the adrenal glands aren't functioning at maximum capacity. The condition is thought to be associated with stress, and it usually comes after chronic infections like the flu, pneumonia, and bronchitis. While this disease doesn't have a list of physical symptoms, it causes fatigue that doesn’t improve with sleep.
Under normal circumstances, your body's immune system becomes very active when you get sick. Your adrenal glands, on the other hand, respond to sickness by releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These are the hormones that are part of the body's "fight or flight" response. Once released, adrenaline and cortisol increase your heart rate and blood pressure. According to the adrenal fatigue theory, prolonged illnesses and long-term stress cause the continued release of cortisol and adrenaline, which leads to adrenal fatigue.
At the moment, there are no approved tests for adrenal fatigue. Unfortunately, there’s also no lab test that can detect a small drop in adrenal function. Currently, the suggested treatments for this condition are a low sugar diet and targeted nutritional supplementation. Experts suggest that those experiencing adrenal fatigue should supplement with vitamins and minerals.
